TorahScope is a reflection on the weekly parashah written by OIM director Mark Huey. It has been developed to offer a unique, Messianic perspective on life that is consistent with the foundational writings of the Torah, also commonly known as the Pentateuch.

The Jewish community has developed the consistent pattern of reading a section of the Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) each week throughout the year. This is a discipline that most in the Messianic community have adopted as well. TorahScope takes these weekly readings, and considers their relevance for human living today.

The "scope" of TorahScope indicates the level, detail, or perspective of observing and analyzing life―whether through the telescopic lens of the world, persiscopic lens of the underworld, or a microscopic lens that will peer into the heart and soul of individuals. When you put "TorahScope" together, you find a grid or lens that can be very useful in discerning life and the answers that many of us seek from God.

Bereisheet (In the beginning)

Since 2002, Outreach Israel Ministries has been faithfully offering a commentary on the weekly Torah portion. Now in 2008, with the strong need for Messianic Believers to diversify their Biblical pursuits, we will be offering a short exhortation on the complimentary Haftarah reading.

Haftarah is a Hebrew term known as “conclusion,” and the Haftarah reading that is connected to the weekly Torah portion is often a short lesson given from the Prophets. Some speculate that the tradition of reading from the Prophets, following the Torah, arose in circumstances where the Jewish people were forbidden by the local authorities to read from the Law. So, sections of the Prophets were chosen instead, which usually had a thematic connection to what the Torah portion of that week would have been, or would somehow reinforce what the parashah would have spoken about. For Messianics who want to see Yeshua “in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms” (Luke 24:44), the need for us to consider the weekly Haftarah reading should be obvious.

It is our fervent prayer that by expanding your review and contemplation of complimentary Scriptures from the Prophets that your walk with the Lord will be further enlivened. With the Torah serving as our foundation, the Prophets give us excellent exhortation to continue in the ways of God. May these exhortations from the Haftarah be used by the Holy Spirit to encourage you to further seek Him and His righteousness!
